Is stress reducing your quality of life? There is no need to hit the pill bottle when there are so many natural coping strategies for stress. In today's busy lifestyles, stress is prevalent and managing it is a skill that many of us need to possess or acquire. With so much expected of us and so much that we want to get done, we often struggle with a balance between fulfilment and overload. It is all too easy for those familiar symptoms to surface when we are feeling overwhelmed. - a tense, exhausted body and a fuzzy mind are just the start. If we leave stress unchecked, various physical symptoms will manifest themselves in our bodies and some of these may be or become serious if we do not find coping mechanisms for our stress.
There are many different techniques for coping with and reducing stress and some of these are listed below. Use these often in your daily life to help fight stress. When you don't allow stress to get out of control you will certainly be able to live a happier and more fulfilling life:
Often, relaxation is a habit, and when we stop making time for it, we quickly lose the ability to relax at all. Make sure that you slot regular breaks into your day so that your body and mind can relax and recharge.
You may think that you will get more done if you just keep on going but the chances are that you will tire easily and end up working less efficiently, so you won't achieve as much. When you take a break, you come back refreshed and ready to start anew. You are far more efficient when you are calm but alert.
When you're constantly busy, your mind can't keep up and you start to forget things or get things wrong. As part of your coping mechanisms for stress, ensure that you set some time aside each day to do something that will relax you. Whatever it is, make it something you enjoy - a walk in the fresh air, a relaxing hobby or exhilarating sport, a long hot soak in the bath, or even an hour watching your favourite television program.
This is important advice if you are trying to fight stress. Give yourself something to look forward to each day and make your own relaxation time a priority. Enjoy it because you know that it is good for you and you deserve it.
Whilst it's beneficial to surround yourself with things that make you feel good, don't be a hoarder. "Stuff" doesn't make you happy and if you have too much you will feel swamped and won't be able to find things when you need them.
Doesn't it feel great when you have a spring clean or a clear out? When you declutter your house, or your workspace, you declutter your life and also your mind. Mess really does equal stress. So, if it doesn't serve a purpose then get rid of it.
Get organised with the things that you do have and make sure everything occupies the space that it is supposed to. Get tidy and you will feel so much better. Organising your time more efficiently by prioritising and learning some time management skills will help to reduce stress too.
While you are at it, detach from those people who do not add value to your life. You know, the ones that bring you down with their negativity and criticism. Make space for some new, positive friends who will support you in your growth and encourage your plans for a new, improved, stress-free you.
If you're like me, then with so many possibilities open to you, there probably isn't going to be enough time to achieve everything that you want to do today. Don't fret when there aren't enough hours in the day, it's just a fact of life. That is why it is so important to have coping techniques for stress. You need to be practical and learn to prioritise.
If you have too much to do, you need to be realistic about what you can achieve in a day and let go of the rest. Making a list may help. Do what you can and carry the rest over to tomorrow. Concentrate on getting the most important task done before you even think about the next one. Often we achieve a lot more than we feel we have done but we forgot the things that we did earlier as we rushed to get on to the next task.
Make sure you get your relaxation time. Whilst it's good to help other people when they ask, if this is a constant drain on your time, you may need to learn to say no assertively. Could you try asking other people for help for a change? How about delegating jobs to other family members.
Don't expect yourself to be perfect and don't strive for that time when everything is done. It's probably never going to happen. So, drop your perfectionist tendencies, lighten up a little and realise your limitations, otherwise you will be adding to your own stress.
For most problems, healthy lifestyle can help. You are, after all, what you eat, and your body needs certain vitamins and minerals to function efficiently and repair itself. Go on, laugh! It's good for you and a great cure-all. Children do it all the time but it seems that for most of us, we laugh less as we grow up. Laughter increases the amount of endorphins (good chemicals) and reduces the stress hormones in our bodies. No wonder it makes us feel good. It is good for your health and a great way to start to cure stress.
So, whatever makes you laugh, make sure that you do more of it. Spend time with the people who make you laugh.
